Archispirostreptus gigas, or Shongololo is the largest species of millipede. And because they’re so easy going and rather easy to breed, the first species i ever got into my little zoo. Over the least ten years, I’ve really enjoyed watching my little colony. This box is really about homesickness and identity though. The central panel shows Dom Miguel de Castro in Portuguese clothing as painted by a member of the Beckx family of artists. De Castro was the ambassador from the Kingdom of the Congo to the Dutch Republic in the 1640s. He travelled to the Netherlands via Dutch Brazil, hence the mixture of Dutch, Catholic, and Indigenous Brazillian elements and art in the box.
